At Expo 2025 Osaka, in the Portugal Pavilion, the Oceano Azul Foundation will showcase Portuguese innovation — from the blue bioeconomy to sustainable aquaculture. “We are at the forefront of creating a market for the blue bioeconomy,” says Tiago Pitta e Cunha, CEO of the Oceano Azul Foundation.
At Expo 2025 Osaka, Portugal presents more than architecture; it brings a message. As Tiago Pitta e Cunha emphasises, the Portugal Pavilion offers a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the urgency of protecting the ocean: “We need to profoundly change our relationship with the ocean and nature — so we don’t reach 2050 with the planet’s life support system bankrupt.”
In this interview, the head of the Oceano Azul Foundation also highlights the architecture of the Portuguese Pavilion, which he considers one of the most beautiful he has seen in terms of Portugal’s participation in world exhibitions. Designed by internationally acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the Pavilion is, in his view, the ideal way for Portugal to convey its message of ocean sustainability in Japan.
