On May 24 and 25, the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka will host the Caretos de Podence, a tradition linked to the Entrudo Chocalheiro carnival from northern Portugal.
The Caretos de Podence are part of Portugal's intangible cultural heritage and were inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Their masks, costumes, and rituals keep alive an ancient practice rooted in winter festivities.
Their participation in the Expo reinforces the presence of Portuguese popular culture on the international stage and contributes to the promotion of intangible heritage.
This initiative is part of the cultural programme of the Portugal Pavilion, which aims to showcase the country's cultural diversity and strengthen ties between Portugal and Japan.
Performances will take place at 11:00, 15:00 and 17:00, and are open to all Expo visitors.
