Textile artist Vanessa Barragão, internationally recognised for her work at the intersection of art, craftsmanship, and sustainability, presents "Oceano: The First Thread" at the Portugal Pavilion on 30 September, 1, 2, and 3 October.
The artwork Oceano marks the beginning of a renewal cycle for the Pavilion, designed by architect Kengo Kuma. Created from recycled nautical ropes that cover the building, this large-scale tapestry symbolises the ocean as a bridge between Portugal and Japan, fostering a dialogue of cultures, memories, and the future.
More than an aesthetic piece, Oceano embodies scenographic continuity and material valorisation, aligned with circular economy principles and sustainable innovation. It is both a memory of the Pavilion and an invitation to imagine a more sustainable future. As Portugal's gift to Japan, it celebrates bonds, transformation, and the strength of the ocean.

Vanessa Barragão brings the project to life with the performance "The First Threads," creating the tapestry from the Pavilion's ropes. Visitors witness, in real time, the birth of the artwork, which she will fully develop in Japan after Expo 2025.
