On 24–25 September, the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka will host the event "The Islands of Life Initiative." This initiative will showcase Madeira as a global leader in innovative water and health solutions through its role as the first official EU Super Site Sentinel System member for wastewater surveillance.
In a hybrid format, the initiative demonstrates how Madeira applies advanced wastewater surveillance technologies to safeguard public health, protect its tourism-driven economy, and contribute critical data to international health monitoring networks.
- Madeira's role as a training hub for the EU Water Academy.
- The launch of the Islands of Life Initiative, connecting island regions such as Macaronesia and the Caribbean to address shared challenges, from resource scarcity to climate resilience and health security.
- A private-sector session to explore public-private partnerships (PPPs) in wastewater surveillance, ecofactory models, and island sustainability.
