Smart Waste Portugal took part in the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka with an exhibition held on 4–5 October, at the invitation of AICEP – the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency.

The initiative aligned with the Pavilion’s mission to present innovative solutions that connect marine ecosystem conservation with sustainable economic growth. As Expo 2025 Osaka approaches 250,000 visitors a day, the Portuguese Pavilion has become one of the most popular destinations.

The exhibition showcased four inspiring examples of Portuguese companies that turn waste into valuable resources, highlighting the role of the circular economy in ocean protection:
– BeyondComposite, with the RecycledReef project, developing modular artificial reef systems from recycled plastics to enhance marine biodiversity.
– Ernesto São Simão, with the Ergomarine line, producing durable and recyclable equipment for more sustainable aquaculture.
– Fapil, with its Ocean range, featuring 35 household products made in Portugal with at least 20% recycled marine plastic.
– ZOURI, a footwear brand that combines plastic collected from Portuguese beaches with natural, vegan materials such as organic cotton, natural rubber, and Piñatex, a fibre made from pineapple leaves.

Smart Waste Portugal also presented four videos highlighting how circular practices can preserve ocean health and introduced the Cluster Portuguese Circularity, created in partnership with CECOLAB – Collaborative Laboratory towards Circular Economy. The cluster aims to accelerate the transition of Portuguese companies to circular models and support their internationalisation.
