Portugal at Expo 2025 Osaka: The Ocean as Global Dialogue

Portugal joins 161 nations at Expo 2025 Osaka, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable and innovative future. Under the theme Ocean, The Blue Dialogue, Portugal stands out at this World Expo as a nation deeply connected to the sea, emphasising its crucial role in protecting the oceans and promoting the blue economy.

Portugal’s participation reflects the importance of the oceans in shaping our future, addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development.

Aligned with the central theme, Designing Future Society for Our Lives, Portugal’s presence in the Pavilion will showcase innovative solutions that combine marine ecosystem conservation with sustainable economic growth, positioning the country as a global leader in sustainability and environmental preservation.

Expo 2025 Osaka will highlight the significance of healthy oceans for humanity, emphasising that international cooperation is vital for addressing global sustainability challenges and conserving natural resources.

With an anticipated 28.2 million visitors, including 3.5 million from overseas, this event offers Portugal a unique platform to elevate its international profile. The Portuguese Pavilion is expected to attract around 5% of visitors, offering an immersive experience that underscores the ocean’s role in humanity’s sustainable future.

The Pavilion

Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the Portugal Pavilion invites visitors to dive in and discover the ocean. Located in the 'Empowering Lives' zone of the Expo 2025 Osaka site, the Pavilion follows the concepts of sustainability and circular economy in line with the best technical and environmental practices.

Relations between Portugal and Japan date back to 1543 when Portuguese navigators landed south of the Japanese archipelago. A historic moment marked the beginning of a relationship that would evolve over the centuries, significantly influencing the two countries' culture, trade and diplomacy.
